Fashion3

Fashion3

18 February to 10 April 2011

Gallery 8th floor, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre

Bangkok - French Embassy, Alliance Francais, and Bangkok Art and Culture Centre present a Thai-French Fashion Photography Exhibition ; Fashion3, giving a 360 degree view of Fashion: on one side of the camera, fabulous Fashion photos, portraits of creators and models, and on the other side, exceptional photographers.

France is world-renowned for its Haute Couture and its catwalk shows; Thailand also has many fashion creators. Thanks to modern communications, Fashion has become a world passion, and photography, much more than television, has widely contributed to this phenomenon. There are countless Fashion photos that have become iconic and as famous as their subjects. But the names of the photographers are rarely known. As they are necessarily behind the camera, they are retiring people and rarely in the limelight. This year, with 3 exhibits in 1, is giving a 360 degree view of Fashion: on one side of the camera, fabulous Fashion photos, portraits of creators and models, and on the other side, exceptional photographers.

Fashion3 is the title chosen by LA FETE for 3 exhibitions in one: “Fashion Story(ies)” / “Moonlight” / “Samsara: The beauty of Birth, Death and Everything else in between (repeat)”. With Fashion3, discover the diversity of fashion photography through the eyes of French, Thai and European photographers.

“Fashion Story(ies)” shows a world of beauty through the eyes of 4 world-famous photographers: Jean-Marie Périer, Gérard Uféras, Françoise Huguier, and Derek Hudson. They will share all the secrets of French Fashion with you: from the workrooms to the cat-walks, behind the scenes of “Fashion Weeks”, the daily life of stars, such as Yves Saint-Laurent, Kate Moss, Yamamoto, Lacroix, Mugler, Givenchy, Dior, Carla Bruni, Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld… Fashion at its stunning best! Adélie de Ipanema and Edouard Genestar are the curators of the exhibition and, also, directors of Polka Galerie (Paris, France): www.polkagalerie.com

“Moonlight” illustrates the renewal of Fashion photography. Jean-François Lepage worked for great names such as Christian Dior, Comme des Garçons, Masaki Matsushima, Nina Ricci, Le Printemps and Shu Uemura. He has been published by many international magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Mixte, Numero, Purple and Vogue. His distinctive style turns photography into fine art.

"Samsara: The beauty of Birth, Death and Everything else in between (repeat)" showcases the works of Thailand’s main Fashion photographers. This exhibition is a perfect complement to the first two and will enable you to appreciate the talent of Sakchai Guy, Nat Prakobsantisuk, Punsiri Siriwetchapun, Tada Varich, Surat Jariyawaatanawiijit, Chutharat Pornmuneesoontorn, Kornkrit Jianpinidnan, etc.

Curator: Jirawat Sriluansoi is the fashion editor of LIPS Magazine.

Within These Walls

Within These Walls
11th December 2010 - 6th January 2011
2nd floor, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre

Artists: Ruangsak Anuwatwimon, Chalitaporn Yamoon, Charintorn Rachurachata, Jeff Gompertz and Rupert James Curator: Bow Nikan Wasinondh

Fragments of lights and colors reveal themselves through the veiled walls. The audience is invited to enter each one to discover the contexts and narratives within.

Drawing from hypothesized national identities, propaganda theories, and the frayed edges of unsettled socio-political quandaries, five artists engage in rationalizing and memorializing of the damages – both physical and psychological – caused by the violent conflicts of May this year.

In an array of pieces – installations, sculptures, projections and graphic art are displayed within a series of rooms on the 2nd floor of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. Walls are deconstructed, illuminating what would otherwise be disregarded, unrecognized, or avoided.

Icons of French Design

Organizer: Embassy of France in Thailand
Co-Organizer: Bangkok Art and Culture Centre

France is amongst the leading countries in Design. Be it a French designer or an object designed for a French label, some of these objects have left a deep impression in our minds and collective memories. In fact, some are so famous that they have been sold for a fortune in auction houses and been given pride of place amongst works of art in museums. In a certain way, they are true icons of modern world.

? Icons of French Design ? is a collection of thirty iconic works representing French design in the 20th century, from Philippe Starck to Jean Prouv?, from Pierre Paulin to Ronan Bouroullec, not to mention Le Corbusier. French design has been distinguished by its magnitude to innovate and incorporate cutting edge technologies of its period, as this is typical for a country where engineering has earned such a prominent place. From the DS Citro?n to the Concorde, and Le Corbusier’s chaise LC4, ? Icons of French Design ? Exhibition reflects a role it has established in the international design history.

The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre during Bangkok political crisis, May 2010.

The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre during Bangkok political crisis, May 2010.

The BACC is located one block away from the protest site, the Raiprasong intersection, which became the main venue after the clash at Kok Woa intersection on 10th April. Thereafter, there began to appear the barricade structure opposite the Art Centre consisting of sharpened bamboo poles and tyres.

During this time the Centre remained open, but with tightened security measures. From the beginning of May, various events planned for the period were cancelled, but the exhibitions on the upper floors and the 3rd and 4th floors were still on view, with perhaps half the number of visitors in a typical week. A number of protest members came to visit the BACC, including using the library. However, attempts were made to take newspapers out of the library without permission.

The BACC forecourt saw activities of various peace groups, especially the Whiteshirts, mounting campaigns for peaceful solution to the conflict. The conflict became intensified, and by 13th May the BTS train service was no longer running, nor the roads around the Centre namely the Phyathai and Rama I, were accessible, the BACC was therefore ordered to be closed (14 – 24 May). There were some twenty staff members remaining in the building at all times.

The afternoon of the 14th saw the height of the crisis: protesters were fleeing the Rajprasong area in the direction of the Centre. The BACC staff members helped directing them to safety towards waiting buses provided by the authority (19th May). The BACC building was not damaged in the incident, except for a hole, possibly punctured by a bullet, in the laminated glass railing connecting it to the BTS station.

The BACC has now been open since 25th MAY.
