Thai Art Exhibition

The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre during Bangkok political crisis, May 2010.

The BACC is located one block away from the protest site, the Raiprasong intersection, which became the main venue after the clash at Kok Woa intersection on 10th April. Thereafter, there began to appear the barricade structure opposite the Art Centre consisting of sharpened bamboo poles and tyres.

During this time the Centre remained open, but with tightened security measures. From the beginning of May, various events planned for the period were cancelled, but the exhibitions on the upper floors and the 3rd and 4th floors were still on view, with perhaps half the number of visitors in a typical week. A number of protest members came to visit the BACC, including using the library. However, attempts were made to take newspapers out of the library without permission.

The BACC forecourt saw activities of various peace groups, especially the Whiteshirts, mounting campaigns for peaceful solution to the conflict. The conflict became intensified, and by 13th May the BTS train service was no longer running, nor the roads around the Centre namely the Phyathai and Rama I, were accessible, the BACC was therefore ordered to be closed (14 – 24 May). There were some twenty staff members remaining in the building at all times.

The afternoon of the 14th saw the height of the crisis: protesters were fleeing the Rajprasong area in the direction of the Centre. The BACC staff members helped directing them to safety towards waiting buses provided by the authority (19th May). The BACC building was not damaged in the incident, except for a hole, possibly punctured by a bullet, in the laminated glass railing connecting it to the BTS station.

The BACC has now been open since 25th MAY.

The Australian Embassy Bangkok proudly presents Erased: Contemporary Australian drawing, an exhibition of works by six internationally renowned Australian artists engaged in transforming the definition of drawing.

The tour of Erased is presented by the Asialink Centre of the University of Melbourne in partnership with the Art Gallery of New South Wales and profiles the diversity and strength of current contemporary Australian drawing practices.



Curated by Natasha Bullock, Curator, Contemporary Art, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Erased features works by artists from Australian urban and indigenous backgrounds: Christian Capurro, Simryn Gill, Jonathan Jones, Tom Nicholson, Raquel Ormella and Vernon Ah Kee. The artists explore social issues ranging from environmental awareness, industrial relations and nationalism, to more subtle statements about image-making in contemporary culture.



The aim of Erased is to expand our understanding of drawing, which is based not only on mark-making, but also emphasises the importance of erasure or removal - an inherent albeit silent part of the creative process of drawing.

Each selected artist in Erased has established an ongoing practice from which they make work that creates a space for political considerations, stemming from a sense of transformation or loss.

While it is easy to think of drawing as a conventional and perhaps conservative art form, Erased celebrates the freshness and vibrancy that Australian artists are bringing to the medium.

About Kasumi Katagiri:
Kasumi Katagiri was born in Japan 1960.
When she moved to Hong Kong from Japan, she got a strong idea “do pottery”.
Then she started to study pottery work in Hong Kong. She always asked own question to her “Is this pottery your life work?” She always answered clearly by herself “Yes, I want to do pottery”. So she learned a lot of studio work and self-teaching for her own art work. She went back to Japan and opened her studio in Chiba Pref. Less than a year after opened her studio in Japan, she moved to Bangkok with her husband for his business. The life in Bangkok makes her work up enthusiasm in passion of her pottery. And she hopes to spread the fun of art ceramic in here. She and her husband therefore opened ceramic studio in Bangkok 1990.

ARDEL Gallery’s DOB space is delighted to announce an international exhibition of visual art. Including artists from Britain, New York and Thailand, On the Edge explores a fundamental aspect of picture-making: line. This exploration is intended to emphasize art-making in terms of method, rather than insisting on strictly contextual considerations.



The use of line is definitively linked to drawing in terms of spontaneity and a sense of the primary. On the Edge understands this definition but also explodes it. All the artists employ line as an end as well as a means. Line is a distinct pictorial device, and holds metaphoric implications in terms of limits, movement and the relationship between observation and representation.


On the Edge offers a provocatively idiosyncratic view of the use of line in a variety of international contemporary art practices. The artists here variously explore line in terms of graffito, the symbolic, the decorative and the descriptive, and the expressive. At issue is an engagement with contemporary art that insists on an acknowledgment of the structure of the image, and how traditional formal decisions are being played out across the plane of aspects of current art.

Like a stage drenched in the sunlit sweat of dreams of equal opportunity, Luke Cassady-Dorion’s interior photographs of Ramkamhaeng University’s innards grip our attention utterly. From the day he became a ‘Ram’ student,’ he knew a photography project would grow from it. He felt compelled to show “how the city is really used, specifically the parts used by the populace as they go about trying to better themselves through education. In stark contrast to Bangkok’s consumer throw-away culture, every object there gets every last drop of use sucked out of them.”



Artist’s statement
From the first day that I started classes at Ramkhamheang University, I knew that a photography project would grow out of it. I had been in Thailand for two years at that point, and had never seen anything quite like the university. In offering education to over 100,000
students at an affordable price, Ram mixes architecture and technology representing close to 40 years of development. In stark contrast to Bangkok's consumer throw-away culture, buildings, computers, satellites, TVs have ever last drop of use sucked out of them.



So many people experience a sheltered version of Bangkok, not venturing past the reach of the Sky Train or a few polished tourist attractions. I wanted to show how the city is really used, specifically the parts used by the populace as they go about trying to better their lives through education.



Ram's democratic approach to education opens the door to students of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds from across Thailand. With no entry exam, and no attendance or homework requirements, students sink or swim by their own initiative – which helps explain why Ram graduates are renowned for their diligence.

A student’s learning experience depends very much on the choice of course. Popular courses are taught in huge educational theaters of 300 students or more, plus an online audience, making student-teacher relationships extremely difficult. While more obscure classes are wedged into any available space; intimate, engaging and sweaty.

Bio
Originally from USA and now living full-time in Bangkok, Luke Cassady-Dorion, divides his time between making art, studying a Bachelor's Degree at Ramkhamheang and teaching yoga. This is his fourth photography exhibit in Bangkok, and his second solo-show. He is
currently working on a book about the changes in his life since he started practicing yoga, fully illustrated with his photographs.

Thavibu Gallery is pleased to present the art exhibition How to be an Angel with lacquer paintings by the Vietnamese artist Truong Tan.



As an artist, Truong Tan is known above all for his erotic references to his sexuality, making use of his autobiographical experiences, perceptions and feelings to mark his artistic narrative. A native of Hanoi, Truong Tan was born in 1963 and graduated from the University of Fine Arts, Hanoi in 1989, where he subsequently worked as a lecturer. His departure in 1997 was largely due to his challenging art that openly expressed his gayness and questioned the contradictions of the then implemented economic liberalization policy or Doi Moi. By rejecting the more conservative assumption of art that were being adopted by his peers, Truong Tan moved to Paris under a grant from the Cite’ Internationale des Artes. Despite his reputation as the enfante terrible of the time, Truong Tan has today emerged as one of Vietnam’s most internationally acclaimed artists with his art as part of the permanent collections of major art museums that include the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan , the Queensland Art Gallery, Australia and the Singapore Art Museum. He has been a participant of numerous biennials in Asia and Europe.
His forthcoming exhibition How to be an Angel is his first solo exhibition after five years and importantly represents a shift in his earlier explicative and clashing art-historical narrative. Truong Tan’s series of lacquer paintings in this exhibition not only trumpet his reconciliation with his cultural history, it also pronounces a mature and sophisticated voice that continues to remain true to his convictions and moral principles

Journey of Paintbrush’s Trail

“Journey of Paintbrush’s Trail” is the latest exhibition of Pishnu Supanimit, one of the most renowned artists and writers in Thailand. Metallic tribes
From a mountain bordering Myanmar to a new life...

When he was 7 years old, Winai came down to Maechan with his father for the first time. At that time he could not speak Thai and the walk from his Lahu village, next to the Myanmar border, lasted two days. He entered the Suksasongkroh boarding school
of Maechan and stayed there 12 years.

In 2005, Winai participated to the "Hill Tribe Ceramic Project" with 11 other students. The
project was set up at Insii Thai House by what is now known as the Chao Phya Abhai Raja Siammanukulkij Foundation.

A French sculptor, Paul Beckrich, had been invited to teach a special and precisetechnique of enameling ceramic... “A way to change ceramic into metal”...This project made the life of Winai take a new turn. It took Winai about 3 years of perseverance and hard work to fully master the technique. The foundation and the Rotary clubs of Maechan and Lampang further helped Winai by providing ovens and material but patience and perseverance were key to Winai’s progress.
All this work has transformed the life of Winai who can now make a living from his art.
The sculptures of Winai are inspired by hill tribes living in today’s world. While one can clearly
recognize the style and particularities of each tribes, there is also a contemporary touch with
a metallic feeling which make these art pieces unique.

Winai already made exhibitions in Chiangrai and Phuket, and his sculptures can be found
in several private collections, including the collection of the residence of the Belgian ambassador in Bangkok and H.M. King Norodom Sianouk of Cambodia.


From the remotest mountain bordering Myanmar to a new and better life…This exhibition is not only about ceramic sculptures, it is also about a young hill tribe artist whose life changed thanks to art.
