Thai Art Exhibition

Thavibu Gallery was invited to present Thai contemporary art under the banner 'Meeting Cultures' at the ARTECLASICA'10 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.The event will run from July 14-19, 2010.

Thavibu will present works by well known Thai artists Vasan Sitthiket,Thaweesak Srithongdee, Jirapat Tatsanasomboon, and Therdkiat Wangwatcharakul.



Vasan Sitthiket is 53 years old and one of Thailand's most acclaimed artists. He is known as a social critic, and most of his works address problems within contemporary Thai and international societies, such as the exploitation of the poor by the rich as well as the corruption among politicians and bureaucrats. He also points his finger to the rest of the 'capitalist world. Vasan has participated in numerous exhibitions and projects in Thailand and abroad, including the Venice Biennale (Italy, 2003).

Thaweesak Srithongdee is 40 years old and a graduated from Silapakorn University. His style echoes the influence of Surrealism and Pop Art. Thaweesak is a keen observer of people, their physical and mental characteristics, and his works are often about the need for self-expression. It is also about freedom from society's rules and the status quo of the real world we live in. Thaweesak has participated in several exhibitions in Thailand, and abroad such as in Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, Singapore, Japan, and Indonesia. He recently participated in the Fukuoka Triennale and in the Jakarta Biennale.

Jirapat Tatsanasomboon is 39 years old, a graduate from Silapakorn University and one of Thailand’s most talented and upcoming artists. He has participated in several exhibitions in Thailand and also in Korea, USA, Singapore, India, and Monaco. Jirapat applies a pop-art style to his paintings and plays around with well known images and icons of western art and transforms these well known icons by changing their appearances and putting them in a new and alien Thai setting. The interaction between the Thai and western characters may be viewed as symbolizing interactions at various levels: east vs west and modern vs traditional.

Therdkiat Wangwatcharakul is 39 years old and a graduate from Silapakorn University. He paints with oil on aluminium sheets or on canvas. The use of aluminium makes his play with light and shadow unique. Typical to Therdkiat’s spatially sensitive compositions are his minimal urban-scapes. He also harnesses staining techniques that imbue his canvases with the same metallic veneer of his mainstay aluminium surfaces, Therdkiat is a master at evoking the loneliness of the big city. Therdkiat has participated in several exhibitions in Thailand, as well as in Singapore, Japan, the Netherlands, Korea, Spain, and the USA. He was awarded the Jurors' Choice Prize in the ASEAN Art Awards.
